A true friend, alternatively known as a secret friend, was a feature from Toontown Online that allowed Toons to send messages unaffected by restrictions of SpeedChat+. The purpose of this feature was to allow players to communicate with their real-life friends; true friend codes had to be generated and redeemed in order for players to become true friends with other players. This feature was never released in Toontown Rewritten.

- When true friends were first introduced in Toontown Online, it was known as "secret friends".
- As the 2.8.2a update that was released on April 24, 2021, players could temporarily create a content pack to remove the true friends button from Toon panels until it was removed.
- As of the 2.9.0 update that was released on June 27, 2021, the true friends button was removed.
