Gyro Gearloose is a cartoon character created by Carl Barks for The Walt Disney Company. He is an anthropomorphic chicken who is a friend of Donald Duck.

In the Toontown universe, Gyro Gearloose is known as an inventor who created the Cogs and several other inventions like the portable hole. Gyro's name was only mentioned in an old installer video and some trading cards produced by Disney for Toontown Online, as well as multiple ARGs revolving around the shenanigans of Doctor Surlee in Toontown Rewritten's storyline.

Toontown Rewritten's storyline

"My name is Gyro Gearloose, and today my story is rewritten."

The events of Toontown Online's old installer video where Scrooge McDuck visits Gyro Gearloose's lab to activate a robot that turned evil and used a Manufacturing Machine to create the Cogs is canon in Toontown Rewritten's storyline. Such an incident allowed the Cogs to make an unexpected arrival during the Toon Council Presidential Elections and initiate an invasion known as Doomsday. The Toon Council's elected president, Slappy, was saddened by a Yesman that first appeared at the event. Toons, including Flippy, successfully defeated the Cogs and the Director of Ambush Marketing to put an end to Doomsday.

Having felt guilty for the disappearance of Slappy and the Cogs becoming evil instead of pursuing their intended purpose to help Toons across Toontown, Gyro revisited his lab that was transformed into Cog Nation. He eventually invented "The Rewritten Device" that he used to rewrite himself into Doctor Surlee. He used his unstable pocketwatch to activate the time reversal and travel back in time to October 26th of 1998, which caused unforeseen anomalies to occur years afterward.

Trivia

  • In an episode titled "The Great Dime Chase!" from the 2017 DuckTales reboot, the Cogs were mentioned on Gyro Gearloose's list of evil inventions. It was confirmed by co-producer, Frank Angones, that this was a reference to Toontown Online.[1]
