Timeline of Toontown Rewritten
The timeline of Toontown Rewritten is a series of events that make up the overall storyline of the game, which began with a story arc revolving around the 26th. Since the beginning of Toontown Rewritten's development, many important elements of the storyline are unveiled with ARGs, in-game events, and in-game updates.
Summary
With his pocketwatch, Doctor Surlee took Toontown back nearly 15 years in time to October 26, 1998, and gave it a new start from the beginning. A ripple effect was placed on the 26th and the Rewritten Experiment started. Surlee used the Rewritten Device to rewrite himself from being Gyro Gearloose and placed his plan to save Toontown into motion, potentially without help from other Toons and exposing his identity. The Toon Council was established, Loony Labs had started that Surlee applied for, and the Toon Resistance was formed. Doctor Fissionton discovered the Rewritten Experiment too early and was ripped away from time when he found Surlee's pocketwatch. The nature of the Rewritten Experiment was revealed and Surlee learned he cannot save Toontown alone. A new Silly Meter was reconstructed that propelled Toontown's silliness to new heights and ended the anomalies of the 26th during the first maxing, which shifted Toontown's timeline from rewritten territory to unwritten territory. The Cogs have retaliated with their own new initiatives as well.
Timelines

Certain events that occurred in the original timeline are canon in Toontown Rewritten's storyline.
2002
- December 4, 2002[notes 1] - In the first of several personal papers, Gyro Gearloose documents his tremendous time in Toontown due to the advancements that were made, ranging from his design of the Laff Meter to the Portability Design and portable hole. He theorized all sorts of new ideas like creating the Manufacturing Machine to manufacture anything from metal and the Silly Meter to track and harness Toontown's silly levels. He was also asked to help prepare for the Toon Council Presidential Elections in the upcoming year.
2003
- March 30, 2003[notes 2] - In the second personal paper, Gyro Gearloose documents his invention of the camera bots and Toon TV for the Toon Council Presidential Elections. As a side project, he checked on the silliness coming from Flippy and Slappy's campaigns.
- April 19, 2003[1] - In the second personal paper, Gyro Gearloose also documents the day of the Toon Council Presidential Elections.
- April 20, 2003[notes 3] - In the third personal paper, Gyro Gearloose documents the moment he witnessed Slappy going sad at the hands of a Cog and blamed himself for the Cog's activation despite not knowing how it happened.[notes 4]
- April 22, 2003[notes 3] - In the third personal paper, Gyro Gearloose also documents the aftermath of Doomsday in which the Toons pushed the Cogs back to the streets of Toontown.
- June 2, 2003[notes 5] - In the fourth personal paper, Gyro Gearloose documents the day the Toon Council allowed Toons into Toontown again and when he left Toontown from feeling guilty.
2009
- February 2009[notes 6] - Project lead of Loony Labs' C.A.K.E. (Categorizing All Known Energy) team, Doctor Fissionton, documents their research on various particles in Toontown.
- April 2009[notes 7] - Doctor Fissionton documents his team's findings on four particles called Antisillions, Glitchinitives, Phooeytons, and Silly Particles.
- May 2009[notes 8] - In the fifth personal paper, Gyro Gearloose mentions he returned to Toontown after six long years, visited his lab that was transformed into a skyscraper at the center of Cog Nation, and learned where Slappy was a few years back. Although he could not save Slappy since the Cogs erased him by the time he found out, he had plans to apply for Loony Labs and come up with an experiment to save Toontown, and declared that his story was rewritten in which he would use the Rewritten Device and rewrite himself to become Doctor Surlee.
- June 2009[notes 9] - Doctor Fissionton speaks about the formation of Loony Labs' S.I.L.L.I. (Scientists Interested in Laugh Levels Increasing) team with Professor Prepostera, Doctor Dimm, and Doctor Surlee who was recently hired.
- August 2009[notes 10] - While the categorizing process at the C.A.K.E. team continues to go swimmingly, Doctor Fissionton is increasingly suspicious of Doctor Surlee and vows to investigate what he is doing. An addendum by Professor Purrview says that she has to remind Fissionton about studying particles due to his distraction ever since the S.I.L.L.I. team took over the study of Silly Particles.
- August 30, 2009[notes 11] - Doctor Fissionton creates an audio transcript as he investigates Doctor Surlee's lab. He discovers the blueprints for the Portability Design, Silly Meter and Rewritten Device containing the signature of Gyro Gearloose, documents with scribblings about a playground evacuation plan, and finally another blueprint for Surlee's pocketwatch. Alongside the pocketwatch blueprint was a prototype of it that suddenly starts spinning with its hour hand in reverse when Fissionton finds it, causing everything in Toontown to appear as if it was collapsing. The pocketwatch stops and Fissionton encounters a rewritten version of himself as a cat, which they deduce that they were ripped away from time and an unforeseen hurdle started when Surlee took Toontown back in time.
- September 2009[notes 12] - Professor Purrivew gives a final report on behalf of the C.A.K.E. team after Doctor Fissionton vanished. She thanks Fissionton for his leadership and hopes someday they may work together again.
2013
- September 19, 2013 - Toontown suffers from a final and fatal Mega-Invasion launched by the Cogs in every playground that is considered to be the day they won.

- ↑ 05 - Final Report
- ↑ Toontown Rewritten entered Alpha at this time, on October 28th.
- ↑ Doctor Surlee's personal journal was revealed in the "Court Records" ARG on June 26, 2003.
- ↑ Lab report titled "00-04-26 - Lab Report" from LoonyLabs.net
- ↑ The Portability Design blueprint also came with a back side.
- ↑ The identities of "the Two" were not yet known to be Doctor Fissionton as a dog and a cat until years later.
- ↑ At the time of when the memo was revealed, Sellbot Field Offices were not yet planned by the Toontown Rewritten Team to be developed as part of the Sellbot Task Force expansion that introduces additional endgame content, though the memo would still have relevancy. Along with Mover & Shakers, Cold Callers received their own offices.
- ↑ The Toontown Rewritten Team had plans to create an entirely new Toon Hall interior but ultimately scrapped the idea in favor of focusing on creating content players would want. A piece of concept art for the interior was shown in another blog post.
File:Tweaks forthefuture.png - ↑ Toontown Rewritten entered Beta at this time.
- ↑ Toontown Rewritten entered Semi-Open Beta, and introduced the PlayLine and PlayTime systems at this time.
- ↑ File:Doomsday recount.png
- ↑ The Anti-Cog Control Hat is an accessory that is unavailable in Toontown Rewritten. The Propeller Packs are what were going to be used for Toontown Online's unreleased Lawbot Field Offices, with models and textures still existing in the phase files. The "weird canvas with the giant mechanical glove" in Doctor Surlee's office is referring to the Rewritten Device.
- ↑ An in-game ARG occurred where Toons had to speak to Mary and other specified shopkeepers including Melville, an HQ Officer, Dr. Fret, Gus Gooseburger, Drowsy Dave, and Professor Flake. Drowsy Dave did not remember his word and Professor Flake offered a URL to Doctor Surlee's memo of which he addressed to himself.
LL-memo-607630003555 - ↑ Toons asked Doctor Surlee multiple questions; one question in particular asked about doodles, and Surlee responded by saying "Doodles? heh."
File:Doctor Surlee Acorn Acres.jpg - ↑ Toontown Rewritten entered Open Beta at this time.
- ↑ Piecing six of Doctor Surlee's blueprints (the Silly Meter, Portability Design, Manufacturing Machine, portable hole, bypasses, and Rewritten Device) together forms a drawing of what looks to be the first Cog he invented that appears to resemble the robot from Toontown Online's old installer video, which could have maybe been an Easter egg and a subtle hint towards Surlee being the creator of the Cogs.
- ↑ Similar dialogue from Doctor Surlee was repeated while he continued the Polar Bear tradition until 2019, before Paula Behr took over.
- ↑ When adjusting the contrast of the image in the blog post, text that says "Doodles, you say? Why yes, I saw one yesterday. Don't tell Doctor Surlee that. He'll find out soon enough." can be read.
- ↑ Toontown Rewritten entered Live at this time.
- ↑ Doctor Surlee's document titled "Info.txt" via LoonyLabs.net
- ↑ LL-TERMINAL26 is Doctor Fissionton's terminal.
- ↑ The Toontown Rewritten Team held an ARG scavenger hunt for attendees to solve puzzles, as shown in the blog post, and find missing pieces of the Cog memo at ReplayFX 2018. The memo was originally too difficult to decrypt and was later reworked for a future ARG on April 29, 2019, that led to Operation: Crash Cashbot Headquarters.
- ↑ At the bottom of the blog post is a fission image given to Doctor Surlee by Doctor Fissionton. The image was the start of an ARG for uncovering the URL to the comic titled Gone Fission: Part Two that depicts what happened during the Silly Meter's first maxing from their perspectives.
- ↑ Three Cog memo images are obtainable from a ZIP file called "COG_FIDENTIAL" that can be downloaded by clicking on the blog post image. The filenames are "12MEMO_A.jpg", "12MEMO_B.jpg", and "RFX18MEMO.jpg".
- ↑ It was later revealed in Joining Forces: Part 2 that "C.F.O." stood for "Cog Field Office".
- ↑ The truce contract marked the beginning of several ARGs that later followed, with this first ARG involving Toons having to decrypt the contract's main body of text and the text written in blue by using the Caesar cipher. Further information for the ARG was documented by a Toontown community member at this URL: https://gist.github.com/darkhappy/62d7bda8f8b28330ee67cbe8d3127e17
- ↑ A second ARG occurred where Toons had to decrypt a message sent by the Toon Resistance through Cog radars containing multiple numbers of Skelecogs from frequent Cog Invasions, which was found to utilize a translation method related to phone number pads. Further information for the ARG was documented by a Toontown community member at this URL: https://gist.github.com/darkhappy/62d7bda8f8b28330ee67cbe8d3127e17
- ↑ A third ARG occurred where Toons had to decrypt the audio file shown in the blog post that contains a combination of stompers. Further information for the ARG was documented by a Toontown community member at this URL: https://gist.github.com/darkhappy/62d7bda8f8b28330ee67cbe8d3127e17.
- ↑ A fourth ARG occurred where Toons had to decrypt the front side and the back side of the Sellbot Field Office blueprint by using the Vigenère cipher, with the key originating from a memo addressed by The Chairman. Further information for the ARG was documented by a Toontown community member at this URL: https://gist.github.com/darkhappy/62d7bda8f8b28330ee67cbe8d3127e17
- ↑ Three music sheet images titled "The Grifters' Groove" were the start of an ARG. Toons had to decrypt the opening statement in the first image where it advised to tell Moe Zart what not to do in a Cog battle by saying the SpeedChat phrase "Don't use Sound on lured Cogs!". Toons had to say the SpeedChat phrase "Hi!" to Abraham Armoire. Finally, Toons had to say the SpeedChat phrase "I'm not very good at this game!" to Jungle Jim who hinted at a chromatic cipher. The Haydn music cipher and Caesar cipher at shift 3 were used to decrypt the music sheets. Each of the decrypted music sheets forms a mission report message from Groovy Garland who warns that the Cogs' Board of Directors is on the hunt, and mentions challenging ToonTasks and upgradable Version 2.0 Cog Disguises on the horizon to prepare Toons for the Supervisor Cogs.
